Heavy rain, flash flood and excessive water flow from the upstream rivers have worsened the flood situation in many districts of northern area including Sunamganj district.
The worst hit districts are Bogra, Sirajganj, Gaibandha, Panchagar and Sunamganj.
Everyday new areas of northeastern districts are flooded as the major rivers swelling due to onrush of floodwaters from India’s Assam province in the upstream.
Sources at Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the Brahmaputa-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma are in rising trend, while the rivers of upper Meghna basin are in falling trend. The Brahmaputa river may become steady, while the Jamuna river may continue rising in next 24 hours. The Ganges-Padma rivers may continue rising in next 48 hours.
The Surma-Kushiyara Rivers in the North-Eastern region of the country may continue falling in next 48 hours, as a result the existing flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may continue improving.
According to the release, water levels at 51 river stations monitored by FFWC have marked rise while 42 stations recorded fall. Among the 94 monitored stations, one river station has been registered steady while water levels at seven stations are above the danger level.
The water of the Surma is flowing 11 cm, and 29 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat and Sunamganj stations while water of the Old Surma is flowing 36 cm above the danger level at Derai station. The water of the Kushiyara is flowing 4 cm above the danger level at Sherpur-Sylhet station while the water of the Jamuna is flowing 27 cm above the danger level at Kazipur station.
