The overall flood situation in Bogura and Kurigram districts has improved as the water levels of different rivers started to recede from Friday morning.
The situation in Jamalpur, Gaibandha, Netrokona, Sunamganj and Sylhet will also improve by today (Saturday).
However, the flood situation in Jamalpur has deteriorated further affecting about 12 lakh 70 thousand people in 61 unions and six municipalities of the seven upazilas.
The Jamuna River at Mathurapara point was flowing 128cm above the danger level early in the morning, but the water level went down 2.5cm within the next three hours, said Hasan Mahmud, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, Bogura.
“So, we can expect that the flood situation will improve from this point onwards,” he told the media.
This year’s flood has affected more than one lakh people in 129 villages in three upazilas of Bogura.
In Jamalpur, Water Development Board sources said, during the last 24 hours the Jamuna dropped
by 8 cm and was flowing 158 cm over the red mark at Bahadurabad ghat point till 9:00am yesterday.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension sources, standing crops on 20,258 hectares of land, including Aush paddy on 4,380 hectares, T-Aman seeds bed on 2,490 hectares, jute on 8,992 hectares, vegetable on 4,026 hectares, Chilli on 188 hectares, Banana grove 107 hectares, sugarcane on 40 hectares and summer maize on 35 hectares went under flood water in the district.
District primary education officer Md Shahidul Islam said, 694 primary
schools have been shut due to flood in the district.
In Kurigram, flood situation has improved slightly, our local correspondent reports.
Within 24 hours, the water level of the Brahmaputra, Dudhkumar and Dharla rivers decreased by 15cm at Chilmari point in Chilmari upazila, 12cm at Noonkhawa point and 18cm at Dharla Bridge point in Sadar upazila and 9cm at Kaunia point in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur, according to Kurigram Water Development Board (WDB) control room.
The District Relief and Rehabilitation Office (DRRO) sources said a total of 7,54,196 people of 1,88,549 families in Kurigram’s nine upazilas have been marooned by the floodwater. Among them, 4,996 people of 1,249 families have lost their homes to the flood.
In Sirajganj, flood situation remained unchanged in last 24 hours as water of the Jamuna river was flowing 100cm above danger level at the hard point, reports our district correspondent.
Communication facilities were disrupted in low-lying areas but road and rail communications in major areas remain normal, according to the DRRO in Sirajganj.
Hundreds of low-lying areas beside the Jamuna River have gone under flood water in Sirajganj, the DRRO said. More than 21,000 families were marooned due to the recent flood in the district.
Water level in most of the rivers in the country, except Jamuna and Ganges-Padma, has been decreasing.
In the next 24 hours, there is no chance of heavy rainfall in the highland areas, said a press release issued by Flood Information Centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board on Friday.
The Brahmaputra’s water level will continue decreasing and Jamuna’s water level might go down in the next 24 hours. On the other hand, the water level of Ganges-Padma will rise in the next 48 hours.
Within the next 24-hours, old Brahmaputra River, Jamalpur, and Sureshwar point of Padma River might cross the danger limits.
The flood condition will worsen in Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur and Mushiganj districts, and will remain constant in Tangail and Sirajganj districts for the next 24 hours.
