The overall flood situation in five districts Gaibandha, Naogaon, Kurigram, Sherpur and Faridpur-has worsened due to incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream.
In Kurigram, some 1,000 families of Dashiarchhara (former enclave) are facing immense troubles due to heavy rain and onrush of water from the hill.
Crops and vegetables on over 2,000 hectares of land went under water due to the flooding. The road communication of Dashiarchhara was disrupted as the bamboo bridge on the Nilkumur River collapsed due to strong currents on Friday night.
Phulbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nasir Uddin Mahmud said steps have been taken to reconstruct the road.
In Gaibandha, nearly 70,000 families of 15 unions in Sundarganj upazila have been left marooned by floodwater due to surging water in the Teesta, Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers.
The people of the 15 unions were taken to 12 shelter centres. The flood situation took a bad turn in 26 unions of three other upazilas-Saghata, Fulchhari and Sadar-with an increase in water level of the three rivers. Executive engineer of Water Development Board here Abdul Awal said water level of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna River rose by 10 cm.
In Sherpur, five people, including three children, suffered injuries as the earthen walls of their houses collapsed on them at Fulhari village in Jhenaigathi upazila on Sunday due to onrush of water from the upstream.
The injured – Khokon, 40, Sahana, 28, Ashamoni, 10, Shamim, 8, and Suraiya, 10 — were admitted to the upazila health complex.
In Naogaon, at least five villages have been submerged following the collapse of 100-foot Atrai dam in Mirapur Fulbaria area of Atrai upazila on Sunday morning, rendering several hundred people marooned.
The five villages are Fulbaria, West Mirapur, Mirzapur, Udonpou and East Mirapur. Besides, many roads, crop fields and fish ponds across the upazila have been inundated by the floodwater. In Faridpur, nearly 30,000 people of Charbhadrason, Sadarpur, Alfadanga and Sadar upazilas were marooned due to an increase in water level of the Padma, Madhumati and Arialkha rivers. The water of the rivers is flowing 8.25 cm above the danger mark.
