Sixteen spillways of the Kaptai dam were opened on Tuesday night to reduce the pressure of water on the lake.
ATM Abjjur Zaher, manager of Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Plant, said the spillways and four turbines were releasing 33,000 cusec of (cubic feet per second) water to the Karnaphuli River.
The spillways are releasing 9,000 cusec of water. Currently, 167 megawatts of electricity is being produced, he said.
Kaptai dam’s capacity is 109 SML but the authorities concerned decided to release water as it reached 106 SML, Zaher said.
The current water level in the lake is 14 feet above that of the normal level, he said.
Incessant rain and heavy inflow of water from the upstream pushed up the lake’s water level, inundating low-lying areas of four upazilas of the district.
Water from the flood-affected areas has started receding after the spillways were opened.
Thousands marooned in Satkania: Nearly 400,000 people in the unions under Satkania Upazila of Chattogram district have been marooned due to incessant rain for the last seven days.
The flood caused houses, croplands and roads in the affected areas to remain submerged. Around 5-km areas of Keranihat-Bandarban road also went under water. All unions include Amilais, Eochia, Bazalia, Charati, Dhemsa, Dharm-apur, Kaliais, Kanchana, Keochia, Khagaria, Madr-asa, Nalua, Puranghar, Chhadaha, Satkania, Sonakania and Paschim Dhemsa. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Satkania Md Delwar Hossain said, “Thousands houses have been damaged due to the incessant rain for the last seven days.”
He said the government already allocated 65 metric tons of rice, 0.4 million packets of dry food and Tk 0.2 million in cash for the affected people of the area.
He added that three additional deputy commissioners have been deployed in the flood-affected areas for flood preparedness, distribution of necessary medicines and purified water and monitoring of the affected areas.
