Thousands marooned: Flood situation deteriorates in Kurigram

Al the 16 Rivers which are flowing over Kurigram district are swelling further. Water level of the Dharla River was flowing 62cm above danger mark at Dharla bridge point and the Brahmaputra River 38cm above danger mark at Chilmari point at 3pm on Saturday, WDB officials said.
Flood situation of Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari and Char Rajibpur upazila have deteriorated further.
The flood victims took shelter to their respective relatives’ houses as well as on flood control embankment and leading their days in a hardship leaving their houses as those are flood affected. Scarcity of Food, Sanitation and pure drinking water is prevailing there. Fodder crisis is acute causing the cattle owners are frustrated due to vast tract of grazing fields went under flood water.
Fresh areas in these areas are being inundated and about 70 thousand people are marooned, public representatives said.
Deputy Director of Kurigram Khamarbari agriculturist Mojurul Haque said 28000 hectares of Ropa Aman, Vegetables and seedlings field have gone under flood water. Kurigram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) Abdul Hye said more than four hundred families of 13 unions under five upazilas in all the nine upazilas are marooned. Chairman of Hatia union under Ulipur upazila BM Abul Hossain said three hundred families in his union are flood affected.
Kurigram Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Rezaul Karim said flood victims are transferred to shelters and necessary measures for pure drinking water and mobile latrines are being taken. In addition 280 MT rice and Tk. 12 lac 50 thousand in cash have started to distribute since Thursday.
