Staff Reporter :
With the end of the rainy season, the flood situation spread in the country. The flood has submerged the low-lying areas of the country’s six districts. The water level has crossed the danger level at many points in the major rivers.
Bangladesh Water Development Board’s (BWDB) Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) said that the water in the four rivers is flowing above the danger lavel, while it in five rivers flows almost touching the danger level.
In the meantime, the water level in the Dudhkumar River at Pateshwary of Kurigram district is flowing four cm above the danger level. The Padma in Pabna district and the water level of Jamuna River are flowing eight cm above the danger level. The Padma flows 42 cm above the danger level at Rajbari’s Goalundo point. Gorai River water flows 20 cm above the danger level at Faridpur’s Kamarkhali point.
Besides, Padma River water level at Manikganj’s Aricha point and Atrai River water level at Sirajganj’s Baghabari point may cross the danger level.
Md. Arifuzzaman Bhuyan, Executive Engineer of the FFWC of BWDB, said all the major rivers except Surma and Kushiyara River of the country are on rising trend, which may continue in next 48 hours.
On the other hand, heavy rainfall and downpour from mountains in India is causing alarming rise in water-level in Teesta and Jamuna rivers. At least 50,000 inhabitants in Sirajganj are now waterlogged, hoping to be aided by the government. Due to increasing water level in the Rivers, the flood situation may deteriorate in the Kurigram, Pabna, Kushtia, Manikganj, Rajbari and Faridpur districts lower basin areas.
BWDB said the water level rose at 64 out of 109 river stations under its observation on Saturday (August 21) and decreased at 42. The water levels at the two stations remain unchanged. Data collection of one station has not started yet. And water is flowing above the danger line at four points.
