Though the flood water has begun to recede in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts, the heavy rainfall in the region in the last two days has again created the fear of prolonged flood with water entering new areas.
Locals said though the flood water began to recede, part of the two upazilas of Sylhet have been inundated due to the rise of water level in the rivers.
The water level in Osmanyganj, Companyganj, Balaganj and Gowainghat upazilas in Sylhet has gone up due to the heavy rain in the last two days.
A resident of Shahjalal Uposhohor, Ali Mia, said the water level rose to some extent in the area.
“The sufferings of the people know no bounds. We cannot easily go outside the houses because of the water on the streets. We are now in fear of a prolonged flood due to the rainfall again,” he added.
Another resident of Islampur Pashchim Union in Companyganj Upazila, Shah Jamal, said, “The water level is rising due to the heavy rain in the last two days. Some 10 roads in the Upazila have gone under water. Water is also entering into some villages.”
Gowainghat Upazila UNO Tahmilur Rahman said, “The water in Pyain, Sari, Gowain and Dawki rivers has increased. The flood situation has worsened due to it. Some parts of the Sari-Gowainghat road have been inundated. But a few days ago, the water started receding in the roads.”
Sunamganj also experienced heavy rainfall starting from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon. As a result, the rainwater and onrush of hill water have caused the rise of the water level in the rivers and Haors.
Water Development Board of Sunamganj sources said, “The Surma water level was below the danger level in the morning, but the water level at Chhatak Upazila was flowing 96cm above the danger mark.
A resident of Mohammadpur area of Sunamganj town, Shahidul Haque, said, “We returned home from the shelter center four days ago. But water again entered our house on Thursday. If water level goes up, we will have to go to the shelter again.”
A shopkeeper at the Kazir Point of the Sunamganj town said, “When I opened the shop in the morning, the fresh water has again entered into the area. If rain continues, our sufferings will be aggravated.”
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board of Sunamganj Mohammad Shamsuddoha said, “The flood situation in the district improved some days ago. As rainfall is continuing, the water level is increasing. But there is no forecast to be worried.”
Flood Forecasting Warning Centre (FFWC) on Friday in its bulletin said, flood situation in Kurigram, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona, Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria districts may improve in next 24 hours.
However, FFWC has witnessed significant rainfalls were recorded during the last 24 hours ending at 9am on Friday. Around 122mm rainfall was recorded in Jariajanjail of Netrokona and 53mm rainfall was recorded in Lalakhal of Sylhet.
Meanwhile, significant rainfalls were recorded in Sikkim, Arunachal, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura regions of North-East India in the last 24 hours. About 109mm rainfall was recorded at Jalpaiguri, 98mm rainfall at Dibrugarh of Assam and 41mm rainfall at Cherrapunji, FFWC sources said.
On the other hand, the flood situation in Kurigram has worsened with the rise of water level in Dharala, Dudhkumar, Teesta and Brahmaputra. Some fresh areas of the districts have been inundated and it has submerged the crop fields
The Charland people are now in fear as the water level in all the rivers is rising. The farmers are now in fear of suffering a heavy loss of crops in the last flood. Even many farmers lost their fishes from the ponds due to the flood.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at some places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet and Rangpur divisions.
Meanwhile, the water level in Jamuna, Dhaleshwari, Jhinai rivers in Tangail district has again begun to rise due to the incessant rain and onrush of hill water.
However, the Water Development Board of the district rejected the apprehension of serious flood in Tangail.
However, the river erosion is continuing in the district and the concerned department is felling geobags to prevent the erosion.
Sources said that overall flood situation in different parts of the country is now stable, but the sufferings of the people are still continuing.
