The normal teaching and learning activities of nearly 900 educational institutions in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts have been stopped due to the flood which is the result of the heavy rain and the onrush of hill water.
With the disappearance of the severity of the Covid-19, the educational institutions started providing normal teachings but the flood has again worsened the situation.
The students, guardians and concern authorities are in fear to complete the teaching and learning in time amid this flood situation.
However, the administration is also thinking to restart online teaching during flood to make up the loss.
The authorities of these institutions said, the teaching and learning activities already fell in a ditch during the pandemic whiling sinking further.
They, however, said they have full preparations to begin teaching and learning activities as soon as flood water recedes.
The Sylhet District Primary Education Office and the District Secondary Education Office sources said a total of 420 primary schools and 190 secondary schools, colleges and madrasas have been shut down.
Most of the institutions in Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Biyanibazar, Jokiganj, Kanaighat, Jaintapur, Balaganj, South Surma and Golabgaj upazilas are affected.
In Sunamganj, a total of 225 primary and 50 high schools in Dourabazar, Chatak, Sunamganj and Tahirpur have been affected while 18 schools have been made shelters, District Primary Education Office source said.
In addition to the submerged schools, over 200 educational institutions have been turned into makeshift shelters for the flood-hit families, forcing the authorities to shut down the academic activities.
Shakhawat Ershad, Education Officer in Sylhet told the New Nation on Friday that they had closed 420 primary schools out of 1,477 due to flood and they have to wait until situation improves.
“The flood has badly hampered the normal educational activities. We have nothing to do but to wait until flood water recedes.
We will start imparting education as soon as water recedes,” he said.
“The flood has forced us to close educational institutions. The education was hit during pandemic. Now the flood has shattered the normal educational activities, SM Abdur Rahman, Sunamganj District Primary Education Officer told the New Nation.
He also said that the flood water is receding but it will take some more time before starting educational activities again.
“Nearly 60 thousands students have been badly affected in Dourabazar and Chatak by the flood,” he added.
“During pandemic the education was hampered and now the flood collapsing the education. But we are planning to restart online classes during the flood time,” he added.
“Our teachers are working on restarting the online classes as much as it is possible to cover up the loss during this time,” he noted.
They said, they will start the educational activities after flood but generally many students remain absent from schools for a long time because some of their families are badly affected by flood, which is a great loss.
