The ongoing flood due to incessant rainfall and water rising in rivers triggered by the storm ‘Komen’ spreads to new areas in southeast and southwest parts of the country.
Thousands of people have been marooned by the floodwater and are crying for dry food, pure drinking water and medicine.
About 15 lakh flood-affected people in Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Bhola, Noakhali, Patuakhali,
Jhalakathi, Barguna, Satkhira, Jessore and Bagerhat are passing their days with untold sufferings as their dwelling houses have been badly damaged. They are now living in schools and high land.
The flood-affected people alleged that neither government nor local representatives have come forward with adequate relief.
More than five lakh families need immediate emergency relief, including baby food, medical care and assistance, to help rebuild their homes, adds our local correspondents.
Abdul Jalil, a farmer of Shindurpur Union under Daganbhuiyan upazila in Feni told The New Nation yesterday that, “We cannot go for regular jobs. Supply of dry food, pure drinking water and medicine are inadequate. No government relief has reached us since the six days we have passed. Now we are really helpless.”
Kalam Miah, a resident Kutubdia upazila in Cox’s Bazar, said, “My family members are living in an open space. We need relief to survive. Please, save us. We don’t want to die.”
In Cox’s Bazar, Kutubdia, Cox’s Bazar Sadar, Chakoria, Pekua, Moheskhali, Ramu, Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas have been marooned by the floodwater. Rising of water level in the river has broken some embankments of Kutubdia upazila.
