A recent flood has damaged Somessori river protection dam at Aynapur area in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district.
LGED built the dam few years ago. An area of 50 feet of protection dam at Aynapur area of Kangsha union has been damaged. The protection dam may disappear any time if the damaged parts are not repaired soon.
Eight educational institutions, two villages, thousands acres of land are under the threat of erosion. The institutions are Aynapur High School, Girls High School, Aynapur Dakhil Madrasah, two primary schools, two kindergartens, Hafezia Madrasa, Union health complex and Union parishad comlex.
Villagers said there has been created cracks in river protection dam due to illegal sand lifting and torrent rising of flood water. If the dam is not repaired urgently , thousands people of Kangsha union , many homesteads, thousands hectares of crop land will be affected.
Md Shamsul Alam, a lecturer of Aynapur, has expressed his concern, we are passing our days in uncertainty and demand immediate steps to protect the dam from further erosion.
Chairman of Kangsha union Md Abdur Rouf Sarker said he has requested the authorities concerned to take proper to save the villagers.
He also said if heavy rain continues, the dam will totally damage and there will have no way to save the villagers.
Jhenaigati upazila engineer Md Faridul Islam said he has informed it to higher authority.
