Although flood water is receding slightly but the over all flood situation remained unchanged.
Kurigram Water Development Board control room sources said, water level of the river Brahmaputra was flowing 21cm above danger mark at Chilmari point while the Dharla and other rivers were flowing under the danger mark on Saturday evening.
The plight of flood victims knows no bound as their houses of char, island char and river side areas are inundated for the last ten days. They cry for relief. The flood victims of the char areas come ahead hearing the sound of engine run boat for relief materials.
Chairman of Begumganj union council Belal Hossain told that more than 4000 families of the union have been flood affecter for the last ten days.
The allocation which I received as relief were distributed 850 families got 10kg rice each family and 150 packets of dry food. The rest families have not received relief materials till now. Although some flood victims received relief which is inadequate, local sources said.
About 500 villages of 700 square kilometer of 42 unions out of 72 are submerged. Kurigram Civil Surgeon Dr. Aminul Islam told that a total of 85 medical teams formed to perform Medicare service to flood victims. Leave of all staff of health department has been cancelled.
According to control room of DC office some 548 villages of 42 unions are flooded. About two lakh people are flood affected. Some 38,312 houses, 17 bridges, one and half kilometer embankment, 140 kilometer road, 43 educational institutes have been damaged. Three persons drowned, educational activities in 129 government primary schools remained suspended due to flood water. Three persons and 12 domestic animals died in the flood.
Kurigram DC Abu Saleh Mohammad Ferdous Khan said 400 metric tones of rice, 4000 packets of dry food and 11.50 lakh taka in cash distributed among the flood victims.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: The recent floods due to excessive rains and rolling of water from the hilly region in Indian states of Meghalaya and Assam have already damaged paddy crops worth Tk 366.22 million in Sylhet division.
Rains and hilly floods first hit the Moulvinbazar district from June 2 to June 5 causing damage to standing Aus paddy crops on 3,273 hectares. Of the total, 760 hectares were damaged totally while partial damage was caused to 1,513 hectares. In terms of total damage however, the area it stood at 966 hectares, the source said referring a detailed report on the damages.
During the second leg of floods coupled with excessive rains from June 26 to July 4 Aus crop land on 5,426 hectares were affected in the Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj district, informed an official at the Sylhet divisional office of DAE. It includes totally damaged 2,368 hectares and 2,853 hectares partially.
However, in terms of total damage the total area stood at 3,446 hectares. Total damage of crops on the second leg was estimated to be worth at Tk 29,70,73,500. It includes, Tk 23,38,87,500 in Sylhet, Tk 6,04,66,000 in Moulvibazar and Tk 27,20,000 in Sunamganj district. In 2 legs the total crop loss is about Tk 36,34,62,300.
Besides, T Aman seedbeds on 45 hectares were totally damaged, which had been estimated to be worth Tk 13,70,000 including Tk 10,50,000 in Sylhet and Tk 3,20,000 in Moulvibazar district. Total damage to the crops and seedbed was estimated to be worth Tk 36,62,23,000 the official added. However, a number of farmers claimed the loss would be much more.
Additional Director of the DAE, Sylhet Md Altabur Rahman Said,the farmers in all the 4 districts of the region were trying recouping the losses by repeated floods while the DAE staff in the grassroots were working in this regard.
Padma river water increasing
Obaydul Islam Robi from Chargat ( Rajshahi ) says : Due to the rain for the last two days , Rajshahi’s Padma River water is increasing .
The water level of the Padma River was flowing down only 3.77 meters below the danger mark in Rajshahi point on Thursday.
If the rain continues, the water of the Padma can cross the danger zone in Rajshahi. The people of Padma and the banks of the river on the banks of the river are presently in the horror of Dinatipata. Besides the water level increased due to the danger of Rajshahi city protection dams. Because after the water last year the cracks appeared on the dam. that time after breaking the Geo Bag, there was no break but after it was not repaired. The city is now being rehabilitated again in Srirampur T-Groyain due to the increase in the water. But the rate at which the water is increasing, there is doubt about the last survival of the Geo bag.
Rajshahi Water Development Board (WDO) said that the danger level of Padma in Rajshahi is 18.55 meters. More than that, he is considered to be beyond danger. the height of the water stood at 14.78 meters yesterday at 6 pm, As a result, the water of the Padma is flowing down only 3.77 meters below the danger level. Rajshahi Water Development Board’s Gauge Reader Enamul Haque said the water level was 13.97 meters on July 12, 13.06 meter on 11 July, 12.92 meters on July 10, 12.88 meters on July 9. And on 8th July it was 12.58 meters.
According to statistics, the water of the Padma is rising at the alarming rate in Rajshahi. If you want to know about crossing danger, Enamul Haque said, in the last 15 years, the water of the Padma has exceeded the danger zone only two times. Of the 9 years between 2004 and 2012, the river of Padma did not cross the danger zone of Rajshahi.
