Ehsanul Haque Jasim :When the flood-hit people of the northern districts are trying hard to recover massive losses after improvement of the flood situation, the flood is now going to hit the north-eastern districts of the country. According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), the flash flood may hit Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrakona, Sherpur and Jamalpur districts and some other parts of the country today (Tuesday) due to heavy rain with onrush of hilly water. At least 40 villages in Netrakona district and 40 other villages in Dinajpur district went under flood water. The farmers fear massive losses of newly Transplanted Aman if the flood worsens further in the districts and continues for several days. The flood situation may also worsen further in Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Dinajpur districts. If the flood hits the northern districts again, the people of the districts will have to face untold miseries. Most of the flood-hit poor people in the districts did not receive relief materials. They are still experiencing untold suffering for the earlier flood and are looking for food and pure drinking water.Md Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Duty Officer of the FFWC, on Monday told The New Nation that the overall flood situation in the districts of north, central and north-eastern part of the country may deteriorate in the next 48 hours. He informed that the water level in the Brahmaputra was in rising trend and the Jamuna was in steady state. Both the rivers may likely to rise in next 72 hours. The rivers in the north-eastern part of the country, including the Surma and the Kushiyara, were in rising trend which may likely to continue in next 72 hours, he added. He also informed that the rivers around the Dhaka city were also in rising trend. In Sylhet, the local people fear a severe flash flood in several upazilas of the districts, as it has been raining continuously since Sunday morning. Many areas of Kanaighat, Goainghat, Jointapur and Jakiganj upazilas went under floodwater on Monday. The newly transplanted Aman also went under floodwater in several parts. Farmers fear massive losses of Aman paddy. According to the Water Development Board (WDB), the Surma River was flowing 82 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point, while the Kushiyara was flowing 77 cm above the danger level at Amalshid point and 60 cm at Sheola point. In Sunamganj, some areas of different upazilas of the district went under floodwater on Monday, while the flood situation may worsen further today. The water level in the Surma was rising sharply. According to the WDB, the Surma was flowing 38 cm above the danger level in Sunamganj, while the Old Surma was flowing 12 cm above the danger level in Dhirai point. In Netrakona, heavy rain in hilly areas across the border triggered flash flood, inundating at least 40 villages of Durgapur and Kalmakanda upazilas. About 30 thousands people of the upazilas have been marooned. Houses of many people went under floodwater. The Someshwari River in Durgapur marked sharp rise and it was flowing about 52 cm above the danger level on Monday, said the sources of Netrakona WDB. The sources also said, three other rivers-Mogra, Kongsha and Dhanu were also flowing above the danger level in several points.In Kurigram, the FFWC and the WDB apprehend of worsening the flood situation again in the district. Water level in the Brahmaputra, the Dharla and the Teesta rivers were rising sharply. Char and some low-lying areas in the districts were submerged again. According the FFWC and the WDB, the Teesta was flowing 32 cm above the danger level in Dhalia point, while the water was increased 17 cm in Kaunia point and 4 cm in Chilmari point. The other rivers were also in rising trend.
