Kamruzzaman Bablu :
The Flat Owners Welfare Association of Rajuk Uttara apartment project has expressed their frustration about the authorities failure in handing over the flats to them though it was supposed to be done by December 2016.
Though eight years have elapsed, nobody knows when the project will be completed or how much time it will need to complete the project.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of this project on April 21, 2010 to provide residential flats to the low and middle-income group of people at an affordable price.
Rajuk was supposed to construct around 22,000 flats under the project.
But in last 10 years, Rajuk has been handed over only 5,625 flats so far. About 100 families have started living in its A-block without having livable facilities, alleged flat owners.
In this situation, the Flat Owners Welfare Association raised several irregularities and corruption against the authorities through a protest rally in front of Jatiya Press Club in the city on Saturday.
Giving example of irregularities in the project, Hamidur Rahman, President of the Rajuk Uttara Apartment Owners Welfare Society told the rally that Rajuk was supposed to install world-class generator from the USA, Japan, UK or Germany in the apartment project. But reality is that the authorities installed China-assembled generator.
“Even, sub-standard materials were used for constructing the apartments,” he added.
Hamidur Rahman further said that Rajuk is yet to hand over flats to the most of the owners causing them big financial losses.
Seeking anonymity, a senior official of the Rajuk told The New Nation that as per the plan, some 7,919 flats were likely to be allotted at first. But construction work of about 10 buildings in the project has been cancelled.
So, now the total number of apartments to be allotted is 6,636. Out of these, 5,625 flats have been handed over to the owners, while 1,011 are still vacant.
Under the project, the Public Works Department (PWD) was assigned to construct 39 buildings under the project, of which four buildings have been cancelled.
Nasiruzzaman Mia, Moinul Islam Vice-Presidents and Nazrul Islam, General Secretary of the the Flat Owners Welfare Association were also present in the protest rally.
