Barisal Correspondent :
Swelling rivers at the downstream crossing danger level engulfing banks and creating flash floods in different areas of Barisal region. Till filing of this report at 8pm yesterday Kirtankhola River in Barisal Port area was flowing 0.4 centimeter upper of danger level of 2.55 meter.
Besides, Meghna and Tentulia Rivers at Ilisha and Borhanuddin points of Bhola district were flowing one meter upper of danger level of 2.90 meter.
Meghna at Daulat Khan point flowing 0.46 meter over danger level of 2.41 meter, Babul Akhtar, WDB Bhola district engineer, also in additional charge of Barisal district, added.
Water level collected from hydrology gauge readers over mobile phone said that water level exceeds danger level at three points of Barguna district, S.M.Shahidul Islam, BWDB Executive Engineer of Barguna district told.
The Khakdon River is flowing 0.47 meter above of danger level 2.85 meter at Barguna point, Bishkhali River following above of 0.46 meter above danger level of 2.85 meter at Patharghata point and Payra River flowing .0.42 meter above the danger level of 2.88 meter at Amtali points of the district, Barguna District BWDB official added.
Sajidur Rahman Sardar, Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board, Barisal region, said as posts of the most of gauge readers in the remained vacant, so it became difficult to find out regular and exact measurements of water level of rivers flowing in southern region.
`The water level of the downstream rivers decreased than three days ago as attraction of full moon crossed and pressure from upper stream became slow. It may increase again during next new moon, BWDB Chief Engineer for Barisal region explained. Worst situation now in Bhola, Elisha, Tajumddin, Daulatkhan points of Bhola, Charbaria point of Barisal Sadar Upazila and Ulania point of Mehendiganj Upazila under Barisal, Barguna, Patharghata and Amtali points under Barguna districts.
We are preparing a project profile to build up embankment on the riverbanks to combat with flood, said the BWDB chief engineer added. The samples collected through gauge readers for measuring salinity of river water are tested manually in Barisal hydrology department as there is no operator to operate the automatic salinity testing machine, the official sources said The few types of equipment preserved in the Barisal BWDB hydrology department are not usable due to absence of technicians and sometimes technicians from Dhaka called to do the jobs at Barisal, local BWDB sources said. As the marking of water level and velocity of the river flows are not monitored regularly and precautions about flood, tidal bore, navigability and river related other calamities are not properly signaled, so risks of flood, navigation on water ways and over flowing of the river banks and low lands increasing day by day, acknowledged chief engineer BWDB Barisal region.
