Dreams of Aman paddy cultivators was smashed due to recent flash flood in Khulna city and at nine upazilas of the district . Saplings of Aman paddy were damaged at different places.
Due to recent heavy rainfall, croplands were inundated. As a result, thousands of Khulna farmers became disappointed severely. Due to water logging on the seedbed , Aman saplings were spoiled. For this, future of thousands of farmers in Khulna has become uncertain.
Agriculture Extension Department sources said, heavy rainfall and tidal surges have inundated Aman fields, seedbed and Aman saplings were damaged. At the same time dreams of the farmers were also submerged into water. Ailments are going on at the families of the farmers.
Sources further said, incessant rain of August 21 and 22, 283 mm rainfall was recorded which was first ever in the last 20 years. At the same time, tidal surges inundate the fields at nine upazila areas. The upazilas are- Digholia, Dumuria, Terokhada, Rupsha, Koyra, Dakop, Batiaghata, Phultala and Paikgachha.
Fishes, vegetables and mostly Aman saplings of these upazilas were damaged severely, sources further added.
Abdul Latif, Deputy Director of Khulna District Agriculture Extension Department said, seedbeds were made on 6008 hectors of lands this year, but seedbeds of 1126 hectors were damaged due to heavy rainfall and water logging. Besides, saplings which were planted before rain, were also damaged. As a result farmers became disappointed a lot.
On a recent visit, this correspondent found that most of the Aman fields were inundated so severely that this correspondent could not recognize whether those are Aman paddy fields or ghers (fish enclosures).
Abdul Malek, a farmer of village South Bedkashi in Koyra upazila told this correspondent that he had made the seedbed by taking loan, but all were damaged due to flood.
Ramkrishna Mollick, a cultivator of village Jabusha in Rupsha upazila said, We can’t protect neither our seedbeds nor Aman saplings due to heavy rainfall and tidal surges”.
Anwar Akunjee, a farmer of village Andulia in Dumuria upazila told this correspondent that their seedbeds and Aman saplings were damaged due to recent heavy rainfall. The financially victim farmers sought for financial help to the government.
