Flash flood hit several parts of Sylhet division and Nilphamari district on account of heavy rainfall and onrush of water from hills beyond the border. Several thousand people have been marooned.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) forecasts that the flood might worsen in Sunamganj while severe flood may hit some other districts in the North Bengal, as torrential rains are likely for next two to three days. The public life in the region may be affected adversely. Town protection embankments and flood control dykes may collapse and river erosion may render people homeless.
Talking to The New Nation, Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Duty Officer of the FFWC, on Thursday said, “The flood situation in Sunamganj has worsened due to the heavy rainfalls and onrush of hilly waters. The flood situation may further deteriorate in Sylhet and Sunamganj within next two to three days. Severe flood may hit Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Sirajganj districts also, as the water level in the Jamuna is in rising trend. The flood may bring serious impact, as town protection embankments may collapse.”
According to the FFWC and the Bangladesh Met office, the water level in most of the major rivers, flowing in Sylhet and other parts of the country, is in the rising trend.
According to the Water Development Board (WDB), 225 mm of 24-hour rainfall was recorded in Sunamganj on Thursday. It was yesterday’s highest rainfall in the country. The people of country, including the capital city, faced immense suffering to the incessant rainfall.
Several thousand people in Sunamganj have been marooned, as many villages of Sadar upazila came under floodwater. According to the WDB, the water level in the Surma River on Thursday was flowing 53 cm above the danger level. However, Khasiamara, Chela, Morachela, Cholti and Kaliuri rivers were also flowing above the danger level.
Fresh areas of six unions under Doarabazar upazila were inundated in the flash flood. Communication between the six unions and the upazila headquarters remained snapped, as all roads leading to the upazila town went under water. About 20 thousand people of 50 villages had been marooned. The flash flood washed away several hundreds of fisheries of the upazila, said local people.
The locals alleged that the flash flood affected the upazila seriously, as the collapsed embankment at Surma Union, which took place last year, was not repaired till now.
Heavy rainfalls in the last couple of days and onrush of water from hills have also triggered flash flood at Gowainghat and Companyganj upazilas of Sylhet district and Kulaura and Barlekha upazilas of Moulivbazar district. Farmers apprehend of huge damage to Ropa Aush and seedlings if the flood continues for some days.
Abdul Hakim Chowdhury, Chairman of Gowainghat Upazila Parishad, said that two flood control dykes are under serious threat. If the flood deteriorates further, the dykes may be collapsed, which will be a serious concern. He, however, said that the communication of different parts of the upazila with the upazila sadar remained snapped due to the flood.
The low-lying areas in Nipharami district also went under floodwater. The waters of Teesta and Dharal are in rinsing trend. Some areas of Hatibandha, Kaliganj and Aditmari upazila were inundated on Thursday. The WDB officials said if the water level of Teesta and Dharal remains in rising trend, the districts adjacent to Nilphamari district will also come under flood water this week.
