About one lakh people of 100 villages in three upazilas of Moulvibazar district are now trapped in flood water which caused following incessant rain coupled with onrush of water from the hills for the last few days.
The water from river upstream in India has flooded the villages of Kulaura, Rajnagar and Kamalganj upazilas. The fresh flash flood has also damaged flood protection embankments in the district with deteriorating the situation day by day.
Reports coming from Moulvibazar said that a huge number of people are now facing acutae shortage of food and pure drinking water.
All kinds of establishments in 60 villages in Kulaura upazila, including schools, madrasas, mosques, temples, crops land and fish farms went under water.
Moreover, some 40 villages in Kamalganj upazila went under water due to Dhalai river erosion at several places.
The flood-hit people are passing the days under the open sky amid dire need of foods, water and medicine.
The bridge constructed on the Manu rive is now at risk due to the flood water.
In Kulaura upazila, flood protection embankment at Tilagaon union became vulnerable due to the lack of repair and maintenance by the Water Development Board (WDB), said Nazmul Haq Salim, chairman of the union.
Contacted, Muklesur Rahman, assistant engineer of WDB in Moulvibazar, said heavy rain over the last few days has caused the Manu and Dhalai rivers to flow above their danger levels at several places on Monday.
Several cracks have developed in a flood control embankment on river Manu at Chatlapur, Tagarpur, Kamarchak, Bhangerhat points, threatening to inundate a number of villages any time.
Moreover, hundreds of people of Miarpara and Khandaker villages under Tilagaon union in Kulaura upazila have been working to stop Manu river erosion, said Md Abdul Malik, chairman of the union.
