Two mobile courts of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in Chattogram city on Sunday jailed five drivers for being underage and not having the driving license.
All five were sent to prison immediately.
The court of Executive Magistrates Ziaul Haque Mir sentenced underage bus driver Ripon, 19, and human hauler driver Shahidul Alam, 23, to one month in jail with the latter failing to show the license, fitness certificate, and registration paper.
Besides, Nurul Alam, 47, another human hauler driver, got a 15-day jail sentence as he did not a driving licence and he tried to flee while BRTA courts asked him to stop to check his documents, said the magistrate.
Another court led by Executive Magistrate NM Manjurul Haque sentenced two other underage bus drivers Md Mannan, 18, and Md Shariful, 18, to one month’s imprisonment.
Although a person reaching the age of 18 is considered an adult, in the case of professional driving, 20 is the minimum age to be eligible for a licence. The magistrates conducted drives in Boropole and Kaptai Rastar Matha areas in the city from 10:30am. They filed cases against 65 vehicles and fined the drivers and owners Tk 1.58 lakh on different charges.
The charges include not having the driving licence, registration paper, fitness certificate, route permit, or updated license.
Out of the 65 vehicles, 11 were sent to the dumping yard for lacking fitness while 16 owners were called to a hearing for not having updated documents, said the officials.
After joining in August, the two magistrates led drives in different parts of the city.
Between August 30 and September 9, they filed cases against 601 vehicle owners and fined the law breakers Tk 11.72 lakh.
In these cases, 84 vehicles were sent to the dumping ground, and three underage drivers were jailed.
