The Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-7 of Dhaka on Wednesday delivered double-death sentence to five persons each for killing father and his son in Keraniganj of Dhaka.
Judge Md. Bazlur Rahman of the court pronounced the verdict in presence of three convicts. The court also fined them Tk 40,000 each, in default, the convicts will have to serve five years in the prison.
The convicts were also fined Tk 10,000 each for injuring Sharif’s son Shahjahan. In default to pay the fine, they will have to suffer one year in the prison.
The convicts are: Shafiqul Islam, Nazrul Islam alias Nazu, Mister alias Chhoto Mister, Arif and Md Masud. Of them, Arif and Masud are at large. Of the convicts, Shafique, Nazu and Chhoto Mister were produced before the crowded court.
According to the prosecution, the convicts hacked grocer Sharif Hossain at his shop in Malpara area of Keraniganj on the night of July 13,1993 as he refused to give them goods on credit. The convicts left him dead on the spot.
The convicts also hacked Sharif’s two sons- Khokon and Shahjahan when they came forward to rescue their father. Later, Khokon succumbed to his injuries.
On July 21, 2004, the then 5th Additional District and Sessions’ Judge of Dhaka Md Kamrul Hossain Molla, now a Justice of the Supreme Court recorded the deposition of 18 witnesses and delivered double-death sentence for the convicts. Later, the accused sought appeal while the court allowed retrial.
