Five more killed in ‘shootouts’

Five people were killed in reported ‘gunfights’ on Friday night in Cumilla, Rajbari, Sirajganj and Tangail districts.
Among them, two suspected robbers were killed in a ‘shootout’ with police in Cumilla while a murder suspect in Rajbari.
Another man was killed in Sirajganj in a ‘shootout’ with RAB. Security forces linked him to a robbery gang.
The fifth man, a member of the local Union Parishad, died in what police said was in “drug violence” in Tangail.
The men who died in Cumilla were identified as Al-Amin alias Kawsar, 30, from North Maniknagar and Ershad, 32, who hailed from Kangshanagar in Burichang.
The ‘shootout’ took place at around 2:00am on Friday near Batakandi Narakandia graveyard, said SI Shah Kamal Akhand.
Ershad was named in nine robbery cases while Kawsar was named in five, the police said in a statement.
A team of detective police led by OC Nasir Uddin Mridha conducted a drive near the graveyard on information that a group of 13 was planning a robbery, said SI Akhand.
Ershad and Kawsar died in the ‘shootout’ while five more were arrested from the scene.
The arrestees are-Md Aurangzeb, 50, Md Milan, 35, Nasir, 27, Shariful Islam and Abu Miah.
Police also recovered firearms from the scene, said SI Akhand.
The man who died in Rajbari was identified as Lalon Halder, 40, from Gobindapur village in Sujanagar upazila.
The ‘shootout’ took place in Pangsha around 4:00am on Friday, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Fazlul Karim.
Lalon was the second-in-command of Purbo Banglar Communist Party and named in four cases involving murder and other charges, police said.
Police recovered firearms and six bullet cartridges from the scene.
Two constables-Shadhon and Shahjahan-were injured in the incident, Karim said.
