M Faruque Hossain :Around five lakh people have been marooned due to incessant rain and onrush of flood waters from the upstream that has inundated new areas in Sunamganj, Jamalpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Bogra and Faridpur districts. Flood Forecasting and Warning Center sources said, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma river systems are in rising trend, while the Surma-Kushiyara river systems are in falling trend. The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma river systems may rise in next 48 hours. Consequently, flood situation in Kurigram, Jamalpur and Bogra district’s some parts adjacent to Brahmaputra and Jamuna Rivers may deteriorate. The Hurasagar at Baghbari in Pabna and the Padma river at Goalando may cross the respective danger levels within next 24 hours. The Dharla flows 40 cm above danger level in Kurigram, Brahmaputra above 52 cm at Chilmari, Jamuna 21 cm at Bahadurabad, 16 cm at Sariakandi, Dhaleswari 50 cm at Elasin, Padma 20 cm at Sureswar, Surma 65 cm at Sunamganj and Kangsha 65 cm at Jariajanjail points. Officials at the Water Development Board (WDB) of the district said Brahmaputra and Dharala rivers were flowing 50 cm and 36 cm above the danger marks respectively.Besides, the water level in Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers has surged by 42 centimeters and 20 centimeters respectively.According to Flood Control Room in the district, some 3290 families have been affected due to riverbank erosion, which also damaged 65 educational and religious institutions in the unions. Nine unions of Kazipur upazila, five of sadar upazila, three of Belkuchi upazila, seven of Chowhali upazila and three unions of Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj districts are reeling under flood water, said WDB sources.Sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension reported that several hundred acres of land have been submerged.Besides, the Jamuna has devoured around 50 houses at Enayetpur of Chowhali upazila.The flood-affected people are suffering for want of food and drinking water. Their domestic animals are also suffering for food and shelter. The local administration supplied dry foods but not enough to meet the need, said sources. In Kurigram, about two lakh people of 55 unions have been marooned due to the excessive rain and flood. The communications was hampered as the roads and streets went under water. They cannot provide food to their household cattle. They are also being attacked with different kinds of water born diseases. In Gaibandha, around 25 thousand people of 19 unions in four upazilas are marooned due to the flood. The affected unions are Holdia, Ghuridah, Saghata, Jumarbari, Bharatkhali of Saghata upazila, Konchipara, Gojaria, Fajalpur, Erendabari, Uria, Fulchari of Fulchari upazila, Kamarjani, Mollarchar, Gidari of Sadar upazila, Kapasia, Haripur, Chandipur, Tarapur and Belka of Sundarganj upazila. Around 1829 hectors of croplands and seedbeds have been damaged due to flood in four upazilas. About 45 primary schools and high schools have been flooded and shut down. Gaibandha district official said, 10-flood relief center were opened for the flood-affected people. The flood situation deteriorated in Lalmonirhat, Bogra and Faridpur districts.
