Five suspected criminals were killed in separate gunfights in Habiganj, Cox’s Bazar and Mymensingh districts early Monday.
In Habiganj, a suspected robber was killed in a gunfight with police in Deoatoli Kalinagar area under Shankhola union of Chunarughat upazila.
The deceased is Solaiman Mia, 30, hailing from Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar district.
Officer-in-Charge of Chunarughat Police Station Md Nazmul Haque said, “On information, we went on a drive and sensing our presence, the robbers’ gang opened fire at us. We fired back in self-defence. Solaiman got injured while the rest of the gang members managed to flee away.”
Later, Solaiman was admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
In Cox’s Bazar, a Rohingya and another local were injured in a gunfight with Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila, on suspect of drug trading.
Nurul Islam, 27, is from Ukhia’s Kutupalong Rohingya camp. The other injured Delwar Hossain, 30, son of late Jalil Ahmed, hails from Hoikang Nayabazar area of the upazila.
Captain of Teknaf BGB Lieutenant Colonel Md Faisal Hasan Khan said, “On information, we went on a drive. Sensing our presence, the drug traders opened fire at us, triggering the gunfight. “The injured due were first admitted to Teknaf Health Complex and later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared Nurul Islam dead.”
BGB sized 20,000 yaba pills, two firearms, two sharp weapons and four rounds of bullet from the scene.
The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy. BGB has filed a case under Teknaf Police Station in this regard.
In Mymensingh, an alleged drug trader and an accused in a gang-rape case were killed in separate gunfights in Sadar and Fulbaria upazilas.
The deceased were identified as Jony Mia, 26, and Jahirul Islam, 20. Shah Kamal Akanda, OC of Sadar Police Station, said that police conducted a drive in Charpuliamari area of Sadar upazila, upon receiving secret information that a group of drug peddlers were gathering in the area.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcement officials, the drug peddlers opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back in self-defence.
Police later recovered Jony in an injured state, and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Jony was accused in 11 cases and three of them are over drugs, the OC added.
Meanwhile, on secret information, police launched a drive to arrest an accused in a gang-rape case at Kaladaha in Fulbaria upazila.
Sensing the presence of police at Eidgah ground area, the accused, along with three others, first attacked them with bricks and stones. They later started firing at the police indiscriminately, prompting the law enforcement officials also to fire back in self-defence, triggering a gunfight.
Police recovered Jahirul’s with bullet-hit from the spot and took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Jahirul and two others were accused in a case involving the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl on August 3 at Palashtoli village in Fulbaria upazila.
