Five suspects were arrested in two separate drives by a team of Detective Branch (North) of Police in Gulshan and Mirpur areas on Friday night in connection with the murder of Awami League (AL) leader Farhad Hossain in the city’s Badda area last month.
Farhad Hossain, 52, General Gecretary of AL Badda unit, was killed in connection with feud over establishing supremacy in the area and distribution of extortion money.
The accused are Mohammad Jakir Hosen, Md Arif Miah, Md Abul Kalam Azad alias Onir, Md Badrul Huda alias Sourav and Md Billal Hosen alias Roni.
Abdul Baten, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said these in a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital on Saturday.
“They are professional killers and they had a plan to commit another homicide,” he also said, adding four pistols, four magazines and 12 bullets were seized from their possession.
All of them confessed their involvement in Farhad’s murder. They also confessed to receiving Tk 100,000 for the murder, the detective official said.
He said some top terrorists, who are hiding in foreign countries, were the
 masterminds of the murder. Top criminal Ramjan, Mehedi alias Collins and Ashik had plotted the murder and fled soon after the incident.
On July 5, two suspects of this murder were killed in a “shootout” with police in Dhaka. They were Nurul Islam Sunny, 28, and Amit alias Dada, 35. Another suspect Johirul Islam Sujan is behind’s bar after his arrest.
“Sujan disclosed their names in his confessional statement in the court, said Abdul Baten.
On June 15, Farhad was gunned down by armed men as he came out of Baitus Salam Jam-e-Mosque in North Badda after offering Jumma prayers.
Two criminals riding a motorcycle opened fire on Farhad and fled the scene. He was killed instantly as bullets pierced through his chest and head.
