Fishing in Kaptai increasing

Fishing in the Kaptai Lake, one of the prime resources of water and fish for the people of Chittagong Hill Tracts, is increasing day by day.
According to Fisheries Department, record 9,364 metric tons of fish have been caught during the current 2015-16 fishing year which is 700 MT higher than that of the previous year. Before this, the highest catch of fish was recorded at 8,974 MT in 2010-2011.
According to the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), the net income from fishing at the Kaptai Lake is 10 crore 36 lakh 18 thousand taka in the current fiscal.
Manager of BFDC’s Rangamati Centre Commander Mainul Islam said, “The amount of taxes collected from the fishing at the Kaptai Lake is increasing day by day.
The revenue is likely to hit record in 2015-16 fiscal as its collection in the first eight months of the current fiscal is higher than the last several years.”
He also added that the BFDC earned only Tk 22,000 when the commercial fishing at the Kaptai Lake started for the first time in 1964-65.
