With the arrival of flood waters in Tarash upazila inhabited by Chalanbil, a great fishing festival has started in the villages near Chalanbil haor-baor or low land areas. When different equipments are used for fishing and catching small fish in Chalanbil area, the old method of using Chai (made of bamboo) which is called Dhundi or Dhiyal is still popular in Tarash area. The artisans were busy to make this Chai as fishers demand it hugely.
Going to Naoga Haat of the upazila on the spot, it is seen that vendors from different areas are selling in rows with hundreds of dhundis. One dhundi is being sold for 300 to 400 takas. However, sellers and buyers are suffering with tax. However, to meet their own needs, they are gathering in the huts.
Azam Ali, a craftsman from Bhadash village, said that it is very durable to make dhundi with bambo. At present, instead of bamboo sticks, Dhundi is also being made with nets in a frame made of bamboo mats. However, traps made of nets often have the potential to break or cut the crab. o the people of Bilanchal prefer the dhundi made by Bamboo. Demand for this specialty has grown significantly as a result of recent corporate scandals.
