The border trade at Teknaf Land Port is being hampered due the recent crisis in Myanmar. The export and import through the Teknaf land port is stopped as no ship came through the Naf River from Myanmar since last week.
Sources said, following the attack on 31 police outposts and one army camp at Rakhine state in Myanmar on August 25, tense situation is prevailing there. After entering around 4 lakh of Rohingyas people into Bangladesh, now, fearing the fresh attack, thousands of Rohingyas already gathered at the Bangladesh and Myanmar border area at Teknaf to enter Bangladesh territory.
On the other hand, Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) directed to stop all types of fishing on Bay of Bengal and River Naf to stop further entrance of Rohingyas. The BCG has started campaign at Saint Martin Island and Teknaf area calling to stop all kind of fishing at the Bangladesh water territory in the Bay of Bengal and Naf River since August 26 until further directives.
Meanwhile, officials of Teknaf Land Port said the export and import through the Teknaf port remained stopped since last Friday. As a result, the government is losing at least Tk 40 lakh revenue every day.
Meanwhile, the authority of Bangladesh has already stopped the issuing of transit passes to the visitors. Besides, the BGB has also stopped the entering of Myanmar people through the Bangladesh border at Teknaf. BGB officials said that issuing transit passes for visiting Myanmar remained suspended since August 26 .
General Secretary of Teknaf Port Clearing and Forwarding (C& F) Agents Association Ehteshamul Haque Bahadur said that the export and import through Teknaf border is being hampered due to the unrest and curfew in Myanmar.
