Bagerhat Correspondent :
About ten thousand fishermen of Dublarchar dry fish village are passing subhuman life on 5 forestless chars (islands) situated on the bank of the Bay of Bengal in the Eastern Division of Sundarban in Bagerhat district this year.
As many as 20/25 fishermen are now living in a thatched house locally known as Chapra measuring 16 x 16 yards though it can hardly accommodates 15 fishermen.. There are no facilities of pure drinking and medical treatment for them. There are no cyclone shelters to protect them from cyclone, water surge and other natural calamities though they (fishermen) are playing an important role in exporting sector of the country. They (fishermen) are always afraid of jungle pirates who are now very active in the forest and in the coastal areas. On many occasions the juggle pirates kidnap the fishermen for realizing ransom. Even sometimes they kill the fishermen and threw them into the deep sea after tying their hands and leg if they fail to realize the ransom from the fishermen. There is no landing center to unload fish from boats and trawlers. All these were disclosed by the fishermen when they talked with the local journalists. But no satisfactory step was taken so far by the concerned authorities to save the fishermen from the hands of the jungle pirates and the natural calamities or to remove their other sufferings.
Every year dry fish processing starts on the various char lands of Dubla on the bank of the Bay of Bengal under Sharankhola forest range in the Eastern Division of Sundarban forest for 5 months in the winter season -from the first week of October to the first week of March before the sea becomes violent). But this year with the direction of the Premier the ministry of the forest affairs banned the collection of all kinds of the forest resources from Sundarbans for its protection.
As a result, the starting of the dry fish processing on the bank of the coastal area in Sundarban forest was delayed. Due to the sudden direction of the Govt. thousand of fishermen were forced to stay in the rivers of Mongla and Sharankhola Upazilas, adjacent to the forest for long 3 weeks in order to get permission and the fate of dry fish village in the forest becomes uncertain.
