Fisheries Week begins

Speakers at a discussion here on Tuesday called upon the fishermen and entrepreneurs to help boost fish export to earn foreign currency.
The discussion was jointly organised by the district administration and district fisheries office, at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner, marking the inauguration of National Fisheries Week 2015, this morning.
The event was addressed by ADC (Rev) Siddiqur Rahman as the chief guest. ADC (Gen) Gausul Azam, UNO Narayanganj sadar upazila Afroza Akhter Chowdhury, assistant director, district fisheries office Azizur Rahman and fisherman Nurul Islam also spoke. District fisheries officer Morzina Begum presided over the function.
The speakers said fishes of Bangladesh have great demand in foreign markets and the government has also taken various steps to boost its production.
ADC (GEN) Siddiqur Rahman said there is a requirement of 45,000 metric tons of fishes per annum to feed the people living in five upazilas of the district. Against that the production is only 16,840 tons.
He said fisheries week is observed to raise social awareness for preserving fish resource and boosting production.
Earlier, a rally was brought out in the compound of district collectorate participated by fish cultivators, fishermen, entrepreneurs, NGOs and government officials.
