100 fish species disappeared: Fish price rises for supply crunch

The price of fish rose in the city’s kitchen markets last week, as the supply of river fish declined with the drying of beel (water bodies) and most of the rivers due to withdrawal of water from the international rivers beyond the borders.
The experts said that, in last two decades over one hundred species of fishes disappeared for the above reasons and excessive use of pesticides in cultivation lands.
In addition, 120 species of local fishes are in danger of vanishing. “We have to reduce use of pesticide, and importing of such foreign species of fish considered threat to the local fish,’ said Abdul Wahab, Professor of Fisheries Institute of Bangladesh Agriculture University, Mymensing.  
On Friday, local cat fish and barbel (magur) were selling at Tk 600 to 700 per kg, Batashi was selling at Tk 500 per kg, koi at Tk 600, koi (cultivated) at Tk 160 to 200, butter fish (pabda) at Tk710, sheat (boal) at Tk 350 to 750 kg, cultivated cat fish (Shing) at Tk 350- 550 kg, butter fish (cultivated) at Tk 300 to 350, lobster at Tk 450 to 700 kg, shrimp (river) at Tk 400-550, Puti at Tk 200 to 400 kg, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 900 to 1100 kg, walking fish (Shoal) at Tk 400 to 600 kg, lata fish at Tk 180 to 250 and Eel at Tk 450 to 600, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 350 to Tk 500, Baila at Tk 450 to 600 kg, coral fish at Tk 550 kg, river Pangas at Tk 350 kg, cultivated Pangas at Tk 130 kg, Rajputi at Tk 300 kg, Tilapia at Tk 140 to Tk 200 kg, Ruhit at Tk 180 to Tk 350 kg, medium size carp (katol) at Tk 190 to 300 per kg.
Sirajul Islam, a retired government employee, came to Karwan Bazar on Friday to buy local barbell fish, but he could not more than half a kg for Tk 350 only.
Expressing his frustration at the high price, he said,  
“I generally like river fish, but due to excessive price thereof, we should take up vegetables for protein.”
Of vegetables, brinjal was selling at Tk 30 to 45 per kg, potato at Tk 18 to 25, french at Tk 40 to 50, carrot at Tk 30 to 35, bitter gourd at Tk 40 to 50, cucumber at Tk 25 to 35, khira at Tk 25 per kg, tomato at Tk 40, pea fruits at Tk 80, spone gourd at Tk 40 to 50, papaya at Tk 25, parble at Tk 35 to 40, snake gourd at Tk 40 to 50, okra at Tk 50, raddish at Tk 20, pumpkin (medium size) at Tk 30 to 50 per piece, bottle gourd at Tk 30 to 45, ash gourd at Tk 20 to 35 per piece, cabbage at Tk 15 to 25 per piece, cauliflower at 15 to 20 per piece, coriander leaves at Tk 200 per kg, green chilli at 60 to 70 kg, capsicum (red) at Tk 300 kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 250 to 300 per kg.
Visiting different city kitchen markets on Friday on Friday, the reporter observed that the price of local hens and cocks jumped by Tk 15 to 30 per piece. Hen was selling at Tk 260 to 300 per piece cock at Tk 350 to 500 per piece. The broiler and Pakistani varieties were selling at 155 to 170 and Tk 170 to 190 per kg.
People of fixed income group and service holder cannot take the taste of river fish and local chickens because of purchasing price beyond capacity.
The price of lentil was selling at Tk 90 to 155, sugar at Tk 74 to 78 per kg, garlic (local) at 180, imported garlic at Tk 210 to 220, ginger at Tk 70 to 120, onion (new) at Tk 25 to 32 and imported onion at Tk 24 to 27 per kg.
Medium quality of rice like Brridhan-28, 29, Paijam, Kajol Lata, Parija and Ratna were selling at Tk 33 to Tk41 per kg on Friday. Fine varieties of rice like Miniket, Najirshail and Kataribhog remained static maintaining higher rates. Miniket of different qualities were sold at Tk 45 toTk 51 per kg and Najirshail at Tk46 to Tk 50 per kg in the city.
Wheat packet of two kg was selling at Tk 75 to 82, packet (brown) at Tk 42 to 44, loose wheat at Tk17 to 23 per kg and flour at Tk 32 per kg.
