Fish and fry worth Tk seven crore were washed away by flood in recent time in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
Sources concerned said flash flood triggered by persistent rain and onrush of water from hills have submerged six upazilas of Sunamganj and three upazilas of Sylhet, causing extensive damage to dwelling houses and roads and fisheries sector in the two districts.
The flood-affected upazilas were Dowarabazar, Shalla, Tahirpur, Bishwamvarpur, Sadar and Derai in Sunamganj and Companiganj, Jaintiapur and Gowainghat in Sylhet.
About 344.8 tonnes of fish and fish fry of 743 water bodies in Sunamganj upazilas were washed away by the flood, according to sources at the district fisheries office.
Dowarabazar is the worst-affected upazila as 250 tonnes of fish worth Tk five crore vanished from 350 water bodies in the flood.
Flood caused damage amounting to Tk seven crore in the fisheries sector of both Sylhet and Sunamganj.
Fisheries officer in Sunanganj Sultan Ahmad said they will take initiative for rehabilitation of the affected fish farmers, adding that all kinds of supports will be given to the fish cultivators to boost fish production in the district.
However, officials concerned could not confirm exactly the extent of damage caused by flood to the fisheries sector in Sylhet.
Contacted, deputy director of Fisheries Department in the district ASM Rashedul Hoque said they will be able to inform about the extent of damage caused by flood to fisheries sector in the district very soon.
Asked whether they would provide assistance to the affected fish cultivators, the fisheries official said they are yet to get any information from the government high-ups in this regard.
Rural people gain lot from UISC
Rural people are benefiting greatly from the Union Information Service Center (UISC) as it serves them multifariously in Sylhet district.
People in the villages have started relying on the UISC for information regarding agriculture, education, health, marketing and shopping, legal aid, paying utility bills and applying for admission in educational institutions and employments.
The centers in the district have been provided with necessary digital equipments, including laptops, internet modems, photocopiers, cameras, scanners and printers.
To run the equipments, solar panels or generators have been installed in the UISCs where there is no power supply.
The villager can get digital information services from the UISCs from dawn to dusk.
Ali Hussain of Faridpur village in Dakshinsurma upazila said, I take e- services from the UISC at Charsensas union. I can have my job done from here. I can have papers photocopy here and communicate with my relative who is staying in USA.
Jalalpur union council Chairman Sulaiman Hussain said rural people are being benefited from the information centers.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md, Shohidul Islam said some of the centers are yet to have power supply, though other important jobs have already been done.
