Fish firms washed away in Bagerhat

Hundreds of families have been marooned with rain water in Bagerhat district recently.
Besides, innumerable betel leaf gardens, fish firms and Amon seed beds are inundated with in seasoned and torrential rainfall.
According to local people and people’s representatives and government officials, Karapara, Jatrapur, Baruipara, Bishnupur, Shatgambuj unions under Sadar Upazila in Bagerhat district were damaged in a large scale due to heavy rainfall.
Innumerable houses are inundated by overflowing and in some cases in breaching embankments. Affected people can’t cook their food as rain water entered in their kitchens.
Md. Aftab Uddin, Deputy Director, Bagerhat Agriculture Extension Department said, in the last week around 300 milimetre rainfall has been recorded in the district.
“A total 1.5 thousand hectares betel leaf gardens, including Amon seed beds are inundated by rain water in Bagerhat district,” he added.
If the rainfall continues, Amon seed beds and betel leafs are feared to be damaged, he informed.
Zia Haider, District Fishries Officer, Bagerhat said, at least 500 fish firms are inundated due continues rainfall in Chitalmari Upazila of the district.
Fish cultivators are trying to protect their fish firms repairing boundary embankments and using nets, he added.
Abul Masum of Baruipara Union told the New Nation our houses, gardens are inundated overflowing the river water. The rain water can’t be receeded as there is no system for drain out the water.
Zahidur Rahman, UP member of Karapara Union said people of this area have been living in untold sufferings due stagnant rain water.
