Fish farming makes youths self-reliant

Youths and many farmers in Dakshin Surma upazila of Sylhet district are now eagerly Fish farmings as it brings much profit than that of other cultivations. Syed Boshor Ali, also an inhabitant of Fuldi village in Dakshin Surma upazila of the district said he has become self-reliant by Fish farming. At first he received training from District Jubo Unnayan Training Centre and then he started farmin fish and rearing cows but he could not get much profit from that, he added.
Afterwards he made up his mind to fish farming. Experimentally, he planted a total of 10 acro land in front of his own house. Two years later, he got much profit selling fishs in the local markets of the district,
he said. Moniruzzaman said he has extended farming of fish on more land this year since profit of Fish farming is higher than that of other cultivations. Every year he earns about Tk 1 lakh by selling fish in the local markets. Getting inspired after knowing about the profit, hundreds of farmers are now interested in Fish farming in Dakshin Surma upazila. Local farmers namely Shamim Ahmed, Ali Hossain, Abdur Rahim have already started Fish farming on their lands.
Apart from them, more than 40 members of Lalabazar Union have shown much interest in Fish farming this year.
Good fish farming may be obtained if the farmers of the district are provided with cooperation, advice and proper training from Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), said sources, adding that they now want sufficient assistance from the agriculture office
