Fish farming in cage, a new devised technology of fish scientist is increasingly getting popularity among the people of Narsingdi district.
District Fisheries office sources said a number of youths in Narsingdi Sadar and Raipura upazlas have been farming Monosex Tilapia and Pabda fish in the floating cage in Meghna river and its branches during the last one year due to its economic aspect. Raihan Sarkar son of former Aminul Islam of Datthapara area in Narsingdi town, the Pioneer of fish farming in cage in the district have started farming Tilapia in Meghna River from 2011 with only four cage experimental, After getting positive result he then serially raised the cage.
 At present he is farming fish in 150 cage and every four months he producing huge Tilapin fish from the cages (each cage producing 300 to 400 kg fish every four month)
Seeing the success of Raihan Sarkar and with the cooperation of local fisheries department another ten youths (Promoter) has been successfully and profitably farming Tilapia and Pabda fish in 450 cages in Sadar and Raipura upazilas of Narsingdi district.
The correspondent while contacted District Fisheries officer Tufazuddin Ahammed at his office last week said fish farming in cage a new devised technology of fish scientists has made a new chapter in fisheries sector. He said fish farming in the cage is more profitable. A fish farmer in over cage (size 10 feet length and 10 feet wide and 6 feet hight) can produce 300 to 400 kg fish in every four months and each kg Tilapia fish are being sold at Tk 100 to 110 and Pabda at Tk400 to 500 in the local whole sale fish markets. He said a farmer an average from his then cages after his total expenditure can profit Tk two lakh in a year easily.
The Fisheries officer opined that the importance of farming fish in cage in unlimited, it create employment of rural people, fulfill the demand of nutrition and the country could earn huge foreign exchange.
Rahan Sarkar of village Dattah para under Sadar upazila of the district said The New Nation that he has tremendous success in farming Tilapia fish in cage during the last two years. This year he got an excellent production from his 1500 cages. He expressed his satisfaction for earned Tk 20,00000 (Twenty lakh) selling the fish this year.
