Fish farming in cage become popular in Narsingdi

Fish farming in cage, the new devised technology of fish scientist is getting popular among the people of the district.
District Fisheries office sources said a number of youths in Sadar, Raipura and Monohardi upazilas of the district have been farming Tilapia and Pabda fish in the floating cage in the Meghna river, its branches and old Brahmaputra river during the last four years due to its economic aspect.
It was estimated that fish farming in cages worth about Taka over 7 crore producing yearly in the district, the office said.
Rahan Sarker son of Abdul Motin Sarker of Datthapara village in Sadar upazila is the pioneer of fish farming in cage in the district.
He started farming Tilapia in the Meghna river from 2011 with only four cages. After getting positive result he serially raised the cages. At present he is farming 150 cages and producing 300 to 400 kg fish every four to five months.
Seeing the success of Rahan and with the cooperation of local Fisheries Department another seventeen youths has been successfully farming Tilapia and Pabda fish in 793 cages in Sadar, Raipur and Monohardi upazilas.
District Fishery Officer Chowdhury Mohammad Abul Farah said fish farming in cage is more profitable. A fish farmer in one cage (size 10 feet length and 10 feet wide and 6 feet height) could produce 300 to 400 kg fish in every four to five months and one kg Tilapia is being sold at TK 100 to 110 and Pabda at Tk 500 to 600 in the local whole sale markets.
A farmer from his ten cages after his total expenditure can profit Tk 2 lakh in a year easily.
