Former Upazila Vice Chairman and young entrepreneur Md Abdul Quader has set up a large-scale fish farm in a commercial plan as he did not get the expected yield from paddy cultivation on sandy land in Ramgarh, Khagrachhari. The new entrepreneur has started fish farming activities by releasing about 2mt fish fry of different species in 4 large ponds of the farm built on 900 decimal of land in Bolipara area of the upazila. The Department of Fisheries has said that his farm has the potential to produce about 20 mt of fish a year. This will meet a large part of the local demand for fish. This is the largest privately owned fish farm in the upazila.
Abdul Quader, a young entrepreneur, said his ancestral land in West Balipara of Ramgarh Union No. 1 of the upazila did not produce good crops due to high sand content. So the lands were uncultivated for a long time. He took the initiative to set up a fish farm here in a commercial plan with the aim of creating employment for the unemployed and meeting the demand for local fish. This is the first time after digging 4 large ponds without fish fry. He said besides fish farming, there are also plans to raise buffaloes and ducks on the farm. He further said that the call of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to be an entrepreneur has inspired him. Md. Shahidullah, a local resident, said that the construction of the farm will create employment for many unemployed people in the area. Because of this everyone in the area is happy.
Md. Shahed Ullah, a resident of West Balipara, said that the fish farm will change the image of the whole area. Upazila Fisheries Officer Vijay Kumar Das said any freshwater fish can be farmed here. If cultivated in a scientific way, it is possible to produce about 20 metric tons of fish per year.
