Fish dying diseases break out in Moheshpur

Various species of fishes in Nasti Baor in bordering Moheshpussr upazila are dying for few days.
The fish farming people were disheartened when the fishes were dying throwing them in an uncertainty. Further, the fish rotting has been polluting the environment, they said.
General Secretary of Bao-r Matsyajibi Samabaya Samity Lakkhan Kumar Halder said, 137 members of the society have been farming fish in Nasti Baor with the financial facilities of a loan amounting Taka 20 lakh from the government. The Baor management is running under a project of International Food and Agriculture development (IFAD).
The general secretary said, they had incurred heavy loss when the most of the fish and fish fries for at least Taka 25 lakh were washed away by the heavy downpour a few weeks back. To make cover the loss, the fish farmers once again have been working round the clock to boost production in the Baor for their survival.
But the fish rotting disease have frustrated them once again, as a few hundred maunds of fish already died in the Baor, he said.
When contacted, upazila fisheries officer in Moheshpur PK Alauddin said, he had visited the Baor and witnessed the fish rotting there. The ulcer on the body of the fishes was found during the visit. The rotting might be caused due to entry of polluted water from the outsides, he assumed.
He had advices the fish farmers to add additional lime to save the fish and fish fries in the Baor, upazila fisheries officer informed.
