Producing of dry fish at the different fish drying villages of Dubla fisherman village situated in Sundarban forest on the bank of the Bay of Bengal was badly affected due to the prevailing of inclement weather for the last few days.
Huge quantity of fish caught from the sea could not be dried during the last few days owing to rains-both light and heavy, cloudy sky and foggy weather prevailed during the period. As a result, fish worth Taka more than a crore was damaged.
On the other hand, during the bad weather the sea became hostile and for that reason catching of fish from the deep sea was seriously hampered.
It is learnt from a source that the fish drying season normally starts in the first week of October every year and it continues till to the first week of March. But due to the imposing ban on the catching of hilsa and fish of other species in the sea and Sundarban forest twice in the month of October on the occasion of filsha breeding period and Rash fair at Dubla by the concerned authorities. So, this year the season started in the first week of the month of November at Dubla fish drying village in Sundarban forest and consequently, it is apprehended that the production of dry fish will be reduced to some extent and the forest department will be deprived from Taka about 1 crore as revenue. At the time of collection of sea fish and drying them at least 15 to 20 thousand fishermen, fish drying labours and dry fish traders assemble on the bank of the Bay of Bengal. After catching the sea fishes they are dried in the sun shine at the different fish drying villages of Dubla.
Abul Bashar Bepari, a fisherman and dry fish trader of Dubla dry fish village told the newsmen, we borrowed Taka several lakh from the money lenders for collecting fish from the sea and producing dry fish. But for unfavourable weather we could not dry fish during the last few days. Matleb Mia, another fish trader of Dublar Char disclosed, due to rains and fogy weather fish caught from the sea could not be dried in the last few days. So, the catching was totally damaged and as a result of it we are finished. All other fishermen and dry fish traders faced the same problems. They told, we have no control over the natural calamities. So, we are to suffer.
Kamal Uddin, General Secretary of Dubla Fishermen Group told, huge quantity of fish caught from the sea was damaged as the fish could not be dried during the last few days for want of sun shine. Besides this, most of the fishermen could not catch fish from the sea during the period for the inclement weather. Moreover, there are aggressions of Bangladeshis jungle pirates and Indian fishermen within the water territory of Bangladesh. By this time the Indian fishermen looted huge quantity of fish and 3 big fishing nets cast in the sea belonging to fish trader Rob Bahaddar hails from Tala in Satkhira district from Alorkol area of Dubla dry fish village. On the other hand, fishermen are frightened to catch fish from the sea for fear of Bangladeshi jungle pirates. In the mean time jungle pirates kidnapped 23 fishermen hail from Bagerhat and Satkhir districts from Alorkol area in order to realize a huge amount of cash Taka as ransoms. All those fishermen used to catch fish from the sea and dry them in the sunshine at Dubla.
In this circumstance, fishermen and dry fish traders of different dry fish villages of Dublar Char in the Sundarban forest are apprehending to incur a heavy loss of Taka several crores.
It is also learn from the fishermen and fish traders about 15 thousand fishermen, fish collectors and dry fish traders assembled at Dublar Char, Meher Alir Char, Alorkol, Office Killa, Majherkilla and Narikelbaria fisherman villages centering the collection of fish and fish drying season. There are as many as six fish collection centers, fish drying centers and marketing centers in Sundarban forest. All those centers are jointly known as Dubla Fisherman Village. Though thousands of fishermen, labours and dry fish traders assembled at Dublar Char area for colleting fish and making them dried, fish drying were badly hampered due to hostile unfavourable weather.
Forest Ranger Kazi Mozammel Kabir, Officer-in-charge of Dubla fisherman village under the Eastern Division of Sundarban in Bagerhat district disclosed, due to rains, cloudy sky and foggy weather the collection of sea fish and fish drying works were hampered for a few days. So, the forest department may loss the revenue to some extent. But at present the weather is fair and if such weather prevails in future the loss must be overcome.
