Producing of dry fish business that started in a good and favourable weather at the different fish drying Chars (islets ) of Dubla fisherman village situated in Sundarbans on the bank of the Bay of Bengal under the Eastern Division of Sundarbans in Bagerhat district in the month of October, 2019.
But it was suddenly badly affected due to the cyclone Bulbul, rains, sever cold in October, December (2019) and January, 2020 in the current Shutki (dry fish) season.
Due to this inclement weather fishermen engaged in the fish drying works cannot collect fish, according to their target. On the other hand, huge quantity of fish already caught by the fishermen was damaged due the inclement weather.
It may be mentioned here that every year the fish drying season starts in the month of October and it continues till the month of March in the five char lands of Dubla fisherman village. In the period a good number of fish traders and Bahaddars go to Dubla fisherman village along with several thousand fishermen for making dry-fish after paying the fixed royalty to the Eastern Division of Sundrbans.
In the current season, a good number of owners of dry-fish depots also assembled at the 5 islands of Dubla along with about 20 thousand fishermen and constructed some 1,040 temporary structures there for fishermen after paying the fixed royalty to the forest department. But by this time they incurred a heavy loss as they could not catch expected quantity of fish so far. On the other hand, the devastating cyclone Bulbul that swept over the coastal districts badly disrupted Dubla dry fish village. As a result, collected (caught), dried and half dried fish of different spices worth Tk. several crores were already damaged. Not only that but also the continuous spelling of cold wave accompanied with fogy weather that continued in the month of December also affected the sufferings of the fishermen and dry fish traders to a great extent. On the other hand, during the bad weather the sea became hostile and for that reason catching of fish from the deep sea was seriously hampered.
Pankaj Roay, a dry fish trader of Dubla fish drying village said , after the cyclone Bulbul swept over coastal region in the month of October fish could not be caught in sufficient quantity from the sea. He added, not only that but also the cold wave accompanied with drizzling that swept the country in the month of December fishermen could not go to the deep sea to catch fish. On the other hand, huge quantity of half dried fish of different species was damaged due to the inclement weather and they were to face a heavy loss.
Fisherman Nazrul Isam said, the fishermen who left their home for Dubla fisherman village leaving relatives there and stay here for long six months in order to earn money through catching fish and selling them to the dry fish traders. But this year, perhaps, they are to retun home in empty hands due to the shortage of fish in the sea and bad weather. So, they are in griped sorrow.
Md. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, General Secretary , Dubla Fisherman Groups’ Association told, fishermen and dry fish traders come to Dubla dry fish village every year during this season with a target; but this year it is very difficult to fulfill their target due to the shortage of fish in the sea and bad weather. He added, if the fair weather prevails for the next 2 months of the season they will be able to make up their losses.
Md.Belayet Hossain, DFO , Eastern Division of Sundarbans disclosed, there are as many as 5 dry fish processing centers at Dubla fisherman village under the Eastern Division of Sundarbans. Every year a huge number of fishermen and dry fish traders assemble there from the different areas of the country during this period of time to catch and prepare huge quantity of dry fish. At the beginning of the current season huge number of fish of different spices was caught in the hands of the fishermen. But in the middle of the season the cyclone Bulbul swept over the costal regions and later cold wave accompanied with foggy weather prevailed in the country for a long period. As a result, catching of fish in the sea has fallen short. In the last year the forest department earned a sum of Tk.1 (one) crore 41 lakh till 15th January from this sector while in the current season the forest department earned a sum of Tk.1(one) crore 3 lakh till 15th January. In the last season the total income of the forest department from this sector was Tk.2 crores 66 lakh 57 thousand 8 hundred 19. Inclement weather
