Fish cultivation in cage brings fortune for youths in Narsingdi

Fish farming in cage, a new devised technology of fish scientist, has changed the life and brings fortune to a number of youths in Narsingdi district.
District Fisheries office sources said a number of youths in Narsingdi Sadar, Raipura and Monohardi upazilas have been engaged in cultivation of Monosex Tilapies fish in the floating cages in Meghna river and its branches.
Besides a number of youths in Monohardi upazila have been cultivating the same fish in the floating cages in Arialkha River.
Raihan Sarker of Dattapara area in Narsingdi Pourashava first started fish farming in cage in Meghna River in 2011 with only four cages experimentally. After getting positive result he increased the number of cages. At present he is cultivating fish in 150 cages and every four month he produce 300 to 400 kg fish from each cage.
Seeing the success of Raihan Sarker and with the co-operation of local fisheries department, over 350 youths has been successfully engaged in cultivation of Tilapies fish in 820 cages in Sadar, Raipura and Monohardiupazilas of Narsingdi district.
District Fishery Officer Anwarul Kabir Ahmed said fish cultivation in cage, a new devised technology of fish scientists, has made a new chapter in
fisheries sector. He said fish cultivation in cage is more profitable.
A fish farmer in one cage size 10 feet length and 10 feet wide and 6 feet high can produce 400-500kg Tilapie fish in every four months and per kg
Tilapie are being sold at taka 100-110 in the local whole sale fish market.
He said in average a fish farmer can profit one lakh taka by one cage in a year easily. The fish cultivation in cage has brought a revolutionary change in the rural economy of Narsingdi district and it created employment of rural people side by side fulfilling the demand of nutrition.
