The first phase of the 5th Upazila Parishad election will be held on Sunday in 78 upazilas.
The EC announced on February 3, the schedule for voting in 87 upazilas in the first phase, but balloting will be held in 78 upazilas on Sunday.
As per the court and the EC’s decisions election will not be held in nine upazilas. These are Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat, Purbadhola in Netrokona, Jamalganj in Sunamganj , Molahando and Madarganj upazilas of Jamalpur district, Natore Sadar, Ullapara upazila of Sirajgang, Phulbari upazila of Kurigram and Sadar upazila of Nilphamari .
At the same time the Election Commission (EC) has warned of stern actions regarding any kind of irregularity during the Election.
The EC said, it will devise “instant actions” against officials, including law enforcers, if they are found to be negligent. “The officials in charge of a centre as well as security personnel deployed will be held liable for any kind of irregularity and the balloting will be halted immediately,” EC Additional Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman told a media call on Saturday. The EC expects a high turnout in the upazila polls, he said before adding, “It is a local government election. The candidates are far more active.”
Responding to a query, Mokhlesur Rahman said, “There has been no room for the Commission to be lenient.”
