The first old home established after the name of Freedom fighter Abu Bakar Munshi of Khulna is likely to be abolished due to financial crisis, sources said.
Only six members (old men and women) are now residing here with deplorable condition. The members of the committee said that this elderly home has been running with the assistance of local people, but without the government contribution, it is no more possible to sustain the elderly home.
After the starting of the elderly home, some government contribution was given but no more financial assistances were gotten this institution and since there is no monitoring committee, the members of this elderly home are suffering acutely, said some local people.
“Many a festivals like Eid comes and Eid goes, but our children seldom come to see us here”, said an unfortunate mother of an elderly home with tearful eyes. The elderly home is located at Mohswarpasha Golokdham area under Daulatpur police station in Khulna city.
The elderly home named “Muktijoddha Abu Bakar Munshi Briddhasram”( Freedom fighter Abu Bakar Munshi Elderly Home ) was established on November 5 in 2009 upon 10.25 cents of lands . The founder of this elderly home is Late Professor Iftadul Hossain Lavlu.
The elderly home was established by late freedom fighter Abu Bakar Munshi who was also a teacher of a government primary school. After thinking the significance from his heart, Abu Bakar contributed the land with a view to build an elderly home and such magnanimity of Abu Bakar is praiseworthy undoubtedly, said local people.
On a recent visit, this correspondent found that the elderly home is standing in a miserable condition. The elderly home is a tin-shed house from the very beginning which was not turned into brick-built building even in 8 years, according to sources.
The unusable kitchen was recently repaired. The residents who have been living here cook themselves.
This correspondent talked to seven ill-fortuned elderly persons who have gotten shelter at this elderly home coming from different parts of the country and some of them have also come from the nearby places in the area.

On condition of anonymity. a local inhabitant said, at different countries, elderly people are considered as “Senior citizens” whereas it is a matter of great that in our country the elderly people are taken as burdens which are pathetic and also heart-rending. from the very beginning the elderly home had been conducted by late Prof. Ibtadul Hossain Lavlu who had built the tin-shed house and used to give financial assistances. After the demise of Ibtadul, a committee was formed for conducting the elderly home.
It is mentionable in this connection that residents of the elderly home never get any contribution by any offices of the government or any private organizations or individual persons. Of course, during the Eid-ul-fitr, the residents got only 5kgs rice and taka 2000 each , said the residents of the elderly home.
The foundation stone was laid by the current State Minister for Labor & Employment Begum Monnuzan Suffian, MP who is at present also the local lawmaker of Khulna-3 constituency.
While contacted Md. Iqbal Munshi, elder son of late freedom fighter Abu Bakar told this Correspondent that his father passed away without observing the development of the elderly home.
If any respective department of the government expands its kind hands, this elderly home might be turned into a developed organization, Iqbal thinks.
It is notable in this connection that every children live by clasping their parents during their childhood and in the same way every parents want to live by clasping their children during their old ages. But all parents do not get this fortune, they are compelled to take shelter at elderly homes. No parents can live with peace without their children.
After going to the visit the elderly home, this correspondent addressed an elderly woman as ‘Ma'(mother) and asked how she was. But the mother said to this correspondent, Who are you and why are calling me ‘Ma’? I have two sons and one daughter who have been leading their lives with peace, but how can I live peacefully leaving them ? She sighed and said that I always pray to the Almighty Allah that they might live peacefully.
A father living at the elderly home said, I’m well, I along with my wife live here, cook ourselves, our three sons earn sufficient money, of course, they often come to see us and give us some money with which we lead our lives and bear our treatment cost as there are no proper Medicare facilities here except a homeopathic treatment center.
Another mother of the elderly home said with tearful eyes that they (She & her husband) once upon a time lived at the house of their elder son, but one day their daughter-in-law hurt on her head during an altercation, thereafter, they started to live at their married daughter’s house but after the demise of her son-in-law, they were behaved as burden and as such they were compelled to come to this elderly home without getting any other alternatives.
Another father of this elderly home said, I have performed all the duties including his studies to my only son and at present he has been doing a good job, but it is nothing but an irony of fate that I have taken shelter in this elderly home after losing all of my wealth.
I had a great expectation that at my superannuation I’ll make merriments with my grandchildren, but let alone merriments, I’ve never seen the faces of grandson or granddaughter.
A Hindu mother of this elderly home said,We couldn’t think that at our superannuation we have to be compelled to stay at any elderly home, because ours is a well-educated son who has been doing a good government job and he has been living along with his wife and two children.
Mothers of this elderly home said, the Prime Minister of our country and also the competent daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Father of the Nation, is also a glorious mother and for this reason we would like to inform and humbly pray to her good self through the journalists that she would give her kind attention to the elderly persons particularly who have been living at elderly home.
If the Prime Minister kindly expand her helping hands to the elderly persons who are considered as ‘Senior Citizen’ in foreign countries, they as well as their leading of lives would have been changed undoubtedly.
