The National Tea Day was observed amid various programmes in Bangladesh for the first time in the 50 years history of the country.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi inaugurated the programme at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city on Friday. Followed by a discussion was held at the auditorium. Commerce Ministry Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, immediate past Secretary Dr Md Jafar Uddin, Bangladesh Tea Board Chairman Major General Md Jahirul Islam and FBCCI President Md Jasim Uddin, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, this decision was taken at a cabinet meeting on July 20 to commemorate the outstanding contribution of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to the tea industry on his birth centenary.
On the day, there was a daylong tea exhibition from different organisations and rare items of tea industry preserved in Bangabandhu Pavilion and Tea Museum at Srimangal was also displayed.
Through observing the day, the role of the tea industry in the overall economic development of the country has been recognised, the Commerce Minister said.
The minister said once tea was exported but now it is not possible as the domestic demand for tea has increased alongside its production.
