First ever WTC of Bangladesh awaits formal inauguration

The long -cherished demand of the business community for a World Trade Centre ( WTC) in the port city of Chittagong is going to be functioned formally after the inauguration of the WTC by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by end of this month.
The pioneer trade body of the country -Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry provided financial assistance to the construction of WTC at a cost of Tk.200 crores on 75 kathas of land in Agrabad business hub of Chittagong.
President of CCCI Mahbubul Alam told The New Nation that they had already completed all preparations for inauguration of the WTC by end of this month . He said first ever WTC of the country will to help facilitate to emerge Chittagong as the Commercial capital in reality from dreams.
 The WTC will also a permanent and temporary display centre where local products will be exhibited, he added .
 Besides, this WTC will be able to attract foreign investors and will boost up the exports sector of the country. It may be mentioned that CCCI constructed the 21-storied WTC building including 3 basements on 75 kathas of land in Agrabad commercial hub.
 The construction work of the WTC begins in May 2006 . Besides the commercial activities , this centre will housed a 5-star hotel with 240 rooms, 2 swimming pools, rop top helipad, basement car parking for about 400 vehicles and one global standard convention centre and a IT centre, sources said.
Sources said CCCI has already joined New York- based WTC and obtained its membership. Chamber President also said that CCCI has chalked out a 5-day long centenary programs of the founding of the trade body from January 28 next and the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the WTC formally on January 30 next.
Referring to the centenary function of the CCCI, Mahfuzul Hoque Shah , CCCI Director said the centenary program of the CCCI will be celebrated in a befitting manner. Within the centenary programs, a youth conference with participation of young entrepreneurs will be held on January 31 next, he said. Reliable CCCI sources said delegates from abroad including Thailand, Nepal, Australia, India, Japan are expected to joint the centenary celebrations.
Mentionable that the century old Chittagong trade body started its journey in 1906 under the regime of British rule and British citizen Mr. JL Brown was the first president of the CCCI and there was no Bengali President of CCCI till 1956. Shabbir Ahmed became the first Bengali President of CCCI in 1957. Mentionable that the demand of WTC was initiated by the CCCI by end of 2000 and the construction work started during caretaker govt in 2006. The last regime of BNP led govt , the architect plan and acquisition of land was finalized , a sources said.
