UNB, Narayanganj :
Gas supply has been snapped at Narayanganj’s Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ) due to a fire that broke out at an under-construction building inside the EPZ on Friday morning.
The fire broke out around 10:30am. Firefighters were unable to move closer and extinguish the fire and had to cut off the gas supply around 12:00pm to bring the blaze under control.
However the fire was doused completely after around six-hours’ trying by nine firefighting units, said Abdullah Al Arefin Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence.
“The fire erupted due to a crack in the gas pipeline during the piling works at an under-construction building of Pallmall group,” he said.
“No casualty has been reported. We weren’t able to move closer to the fire due to extreme gas pressure. That’s why we had to disconnect the gas supply,” said Abdullah.
According to witnesses, the gas pipeline under Pallmall group’s Hamza Fashion building cracked when piling works of the under-construction building reached 20-feet under the surface around 6:30am.
“Sand continued to come out from the surface and three hours later, a fire broke out after a huge blast,” said Md Rony, an Engineer of Advance Company Limited, the firm that was hired to survey the building.
Uzzal Hossain, a construction worker, said that there were at least 20 people standing near the spot.
“All of them moved away after the gas pipeline cracked. There were no casualties as no one was close to the spot,” added Uzzal.
