A 22-member team of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) will leave Dhaka today [Thursday] for Nepal to take part in rescue operation in earthquake areas.
FSCD Director (operation and maintenance) Major AKM Shakeel Nawaz will lead the squad titled’ urban search and rescue team’.
State Minister for Home Ministry Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said this while addressing a press briefing at FSCD office on Wednesday. “It is for the first in country’s history that a FSCD team is going abroad to rescue the victims of natural disaster”, said the minister and added that many countries came forward to join the rescue operation of earthquake-hit areas of Nepal.
As a neighbouring country, it is our moral duty to join the rescue operation in Nepal” he said.
FSCD Director General Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan said the team would carry out rescue work in quake-devastated areas. They are taking a huge amount of materials, which may be helpful in rescue operations. On Saturday, around 5,000 people died in a powerful earthquake in Nepal, with many more feared trapped under rubble. The 7.8 magnitude quake struck an area between the capital, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara.
