Fire ravaged shop owners in Dhaka North City Corporation market in Gulshan have demanded their immediate rehabilitations and compensation. They also demanded a judicial inquiry on the incident.
“We are in a vulnerable situation now. Everything of our livelihoods has been burnt,” Sher Mahmud, the President of DNCC kancha market businessmen association said in a press conference on Sunday.
He added: “We, the affected shop owners are facing hard situation to provide daily needs of our families. We request our Prime Minister and the DNCC mayor to take steps for our immediate rehabilitation and compensation.”
Mahmud said, the break out of fire was an act of sabotage.
Some miscreants were behind the act, he said. But he did not disclose the names of the suspects.

The President put ahead three points of demand that, to give them compensations, immediately rehabilitations and to allot shops without further allotment fees in the newly building of the market.
The business body want to rehabilitates them in the open spaces of the market which is now using as car parking lot.
“If the Mayor arrange to rehabilitate us in temporary basis in the open space of the market, we are agree to start business there,” the business leader said replying a question of the journalists.
Replying a questions, Abul Kashem, the General Secretary of the business body, said, “The 400 fire ravaged shop owners were loss approximately Tk six thousand crore.”
Sher Mahmud said with intertwined tears that they have been doing business there since 1983, but all of them are now in worst situation due to the incident.
“There are around 20 thousand men were depended for their daily income on the market. Now all of them are need immediate rehabilitations,” he said.
The shop owners said, different times different Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation tried to rebuild the market as multi-storied shopping malls. In 2009 experts from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have tested the conditions of the market after found crack in the building. But the then mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka was not provide the test report to the businessmen.
“In 2014, we get the reports. The authority completed a major repairing under the three recommendations of the reports,” said the businessmen.
Sher Mahmud praises the DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq saying he is very sympathetic to the businessmen.
“The Mayor come twice every day to see us and to show his sincere sympathy to us. We hope that the Mayor will help us to start our life further,” he said.
