Fire guts 35 houses in Rangamati

At least 35 houses were gutted as a fire broke out near the Public Health Department in the district headquarters on Monday morning.
The fire originated from an oven of the kitchen of a house in the area around 9am and it soon engulfed the adjacent establishment and furniture shops, said Golam Mostafa, assistant director of Rangamati fire-fighting unit.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after two hours of frantic efforts with the help of police, army and local people.
Vehicular movement on the Chittagong-Rangamati highway came to halt following the incident.
The extent of losses could not be ascertained immediately.
Rangamati Press Club election held: The biennial election of Rangamati Press Club was held on Friday.
District Correspondent of Dainik Purbokone Sakhawat Hossain Rubel was elected president and Editor of Dainik Rangamati was elected general secretary.
The other elected of the 12-member executive committee are: Oli Ahmed, vice-president; Pulak Chakraborty, treasurer; Suproy Chakma, office secretary; Abdul Hamid, literature secretary; the executive committee members who were elected unopposed are: Sunil Kanti Dey, A K M Jahurul Haq and Muhammad Ilias. However, no candidate contested for one post of assistant sectary and two posts of executive members.
