Fire at Nilkhet book market: 40 shops gutted

A devastating fire broke out in the Islamia Book Market of the city’s Nilkhet area on Friday night.
The fire might have originated from an electric malfunction at about 7:50pm, said Mizanur Rahman, the Duty Officer of the Control Room of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department (FSCD).
However, no causality was reported till filing of the news at 10:00pm, the FSCD official said.
At least 10 fire units worked to douse the flames by 8:45pm, he said.
When contacted, Debashis Bardhan, Deputy Director (Operations ) of the FSCD, told The New Nation in cell phone, “About 40 shops were burnt in the fire. It first broke out on the second floor of the market.”
We could not estimate the losses of the fire incident instantly, the FSCD official said.
The forming of a probe-body was under process, he said.
