A fire broke out at a refrigerator factory at Dhirasram of Gazipur on Friday morning.
The fire broke out on the sixth floor of the factory around 7:15am and it was brought under control after seven hours of frantic efforts, Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defense Senior Station Officer Atiqur Rahman said.
Receiving information, 18 units of fire-fighters from different stations rushed to the spot and doused the fire by 2:15pm, he said.
The fire quickly spread to the 4th and 5th floor of the six-storey warehouse of the electronics factory, but reason behind the fire and further details could not be known immediately, Atiqur Rahman said.
No causality has so far been reported, the fire official said.
The fire fighters were facing difficulties as combustible materials were stocked inside the building, he said.
The fire also erupted from an electronics home appliances manufacturing plant, which, officials said, lacked adequate fire safety measures, he added,
Besides, there were no sufficient fire safety measures in the building, he added.
“The fire originated in the warehouse on the building’s top floor, but the cause of the flames and the extent of damages are yet to be assessed,” he said.
“The factory didn’t exercise fire drills regularly. Presence of Warehouse on the sixth floor is also a violation of the regulations,” Assistant Inspector General Motalib Mia said.
He said the factory authorities were served with a notice some four weeks ago for not having fire alarm and safety equipment. “But they didn’t respond. The factory inspection department will initiate measures against them.”
Various home appliances manufactured in the factory were stored on the sixth floor, said the company’s Head of Media KMG Kibria, but he could not provide an estimated value of the goods gutted.
The factory assembles fridges and TVs, and manufactures home appliances like rice cookers and irons, said Deputy General Manager (Accounts and Finance) Md Rafiqul Islam.
MA Razzak Khan, the Chairman of Myone Electronics and Minister Hi-Tech Park Ltd, also skirted questions on the issue and said, “Factory operations were shut at that time. We don’t know how the fire broke out on the sixth floor.”
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner SM Tariqul Islam said that a seven-strong probe panel headed by an Additional District Magistrate has been ordered to file its findings within seven working days.
