Fire at city’s Mohakhali, Mohammadpur slums, 70 shanties gutted

Two separate fire incidents occurred in the city’s Mohammadpur and Mohakhali areas between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon respectively.
The first one broke out at Bihari Potti in Mohammadpur area of capital Dhaka could be doused after around one and a half hours frantic efforts.
Around 10 units of the fire fighters worked to douse the blaze around 5:50pm, said Shahzadi Sultana, Officer in-Charge of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Headquarters.
Earlier about 4:15pm on Tuesday, a massive fire broke out at Geneva camp on the Babor Road, Shahzadi said.
The causes of the fire incident could not be known immediately though no casualties were reported, said Rashel Sikder, Duty Officer of Fire Service Control Room.
Meanwhile, at least 70 shanties have been gutted and one person was burnt in a fire at the ‘Sattola Bosti’ in city’s Mohakhali around Monday midnight.The fire that broke out at around 11:45pm was brought under control after three hours frantic efforts of around 200 firefighters on Tuesday.
Debashis Bardhan, Deputy Director (Operations) of Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed the matter.
“Initially, we are suspecting that the fire erupted either from an electric short circuit or gas leakage. The extent of damage caused by the fire is yet to be determined,” he said.
A teenage boy Md Rakib Islam, son of one Yunus Ali from Matkala village in Hossainpur upazila of Kishoreganj, sustained 25 percent burn in his body in the fire.
He was admitted to city’s Sheikh Hasina Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
It is mentionable that flames at slums in Dhaka are quite common. On May 15, 2015, another fire broke out in Sattola Bosti and around 20 shanties were gutted. In December 2016, another fire erupted in the same slum.
